Alex let herself fall into the kiss, but only for a moment. Even as her body was screaming at her to continue, her mind knew she couldn't.

Pushing Aaron away, she wiped her mouth and stalked away.

"You don't have anything to say?" He followed her, relentless. "Hey! Don't walk away from me!"

Alex whirled on him. "This is my store. Get out or I'll call the cops."

"Baby, I own this entire building. The cops won't do a damned thing."

She snarled at him. He was laughing down at her, and she wanted to claw his eyes out. Instead, she picked up the nearest book and chucked it straight at his head.

He ducked just in time. "Alex, what the fuck—?"

She threw another book. It sideswiped his shoulder.

"You—" Another book thrown. "Can—" Another. "Go—" One last one. "To hell!"

Aaron didn't dodge the last book. He let it hit him in the chest, but based on his expression, he'd barely felt the blow.

Alex was panting now. To her frustration, Aaron didn't seem remotely fazed by her book throwing.

"Are you done?" he asked.

"Not sure yet. How about we go to the nonfiction section, and we try a few big ones?"

Before she could make good on her threat, Aaron seized her by the waist, holding her captive in his strong embrace.

"I never wanted this," he said, sounding like he was in agony. "That night on the beach—I've never stopped thinking about it. And I've fucking tried. I've tried my hardest to get you out of my head, but it's like you're an incurable disease."

Alex glared at him. "Wow, thanks for the compliment."

"It wasn't a compliment." He gripped her harder. "Nothing about you is good. You drive me insane. You're obnoxious, stubborn, nosey, entitled—"

"And you're a greedy, heartless son of a bitch who doesn't care that he's ruining people's lives! Don't act like you're a saint, either."

Despite his harsh words, his hands roved over her back down to her ass. He pressed her closer until she could feel the outline of his hardened cock against her hip.

"I want you more than I've ever wanted any woman." His voice was a rasp in her ear. "I want to fuck you until this thing between us goes away."

Alex swallowed. She hated that she was trembling. Most of all, she hated how she wanted him to keep touching her. Or that she reveled in how good he smelled, or how strong his arms were around her.

"Why am I such a bad choice for you?" she whispered. Her chest felt unbearably tight.

"Because you aren't right for me. We both know it. We'd kill each other in the end."

"You don't know that." But even as she said the words, she wasn't sure if she believed them.

Aaron began kissing her throat, his breath hot, his tongue tracing patterns that made her melt.

"It's just lust. It'll pass." He sucked on the lobe of her ear.

As Aaron continued to kiss her, Alex couldn't help but touch him back. She pushed his shirt up, wanting to feel the heat of his skin.
